| Advanced training at CMDT |
![]() estudantes An essential area of work of the LA, this is intimately related to the other thematic areas (biomedical research, cooperation for development and networking). The main objectives of this area concern Graduate training (Research initiation experience for graduates; Graduation thesis orientation; Special graduation programs [Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci]), Postgraduate training (Postgraduate courses; Masters Programs and PhD Programs) Furthermore, CMDT is committed to capacity building training actions in (for) endemic countries, including on-site informal training (hospitals, faculties) of health human resources, practical courses, seminars and workshops and special programs for African human resources at IHMT. Major Achievements:Intensive collaborative activities with secondary schools, started under the auspices of Ciência Viva program, but not limited to it. The number of graduation thesis has grown exponentially and arrangements had to be made for institutional reasons, i.e. the physical infrastructure at IHMT will not be able to support larger numbers of students. Increased numbers of LEONARDO and ERASMUS program requests and training actions have been developed at CMDT, directly and trough special dedicated international agencies. There was a significant number of post-graduate courses in tropical countries (Brazil, Angola, Mozambique), developed by CMDT, as well as African and South American students in European courses, via CMDT. Informal training actions of these kind of students in CMDT’s premises take place regularly, on the grounds of collaborations with research groups from the countries of origin. There was an increased number of Masters at ihmt, with strong participation of LA groups, as well as an increased number of African students in MSc programs, via CMDT. The same was true for African and Brazilian students in PhD programs. A special program with Angola, Procaps, involving PhD tailored program, includes now 11 students, having started in 2006 with funding from CMDT, the Portuguese Institute for Cooperation (IPAD) and the Angolan Ministry of Health. Future ResearchOur future plans for Advanced Training actions include: The reinforcement and development of permanent tools of interaction with civil society based in Ciência Viva model and supported on already established links with model-schools. In parallel, Leonardo and Erasmus actions will be supported at the LA’s level, whenever possible in multidisciplinary environment. To contribute for the restructuring of the postgraduate programs at ihmt, on previously described grounds (see above). To maintain the integration of research groups in postgraduate programs at national level, with emphasis for UNL-based and inter-institutional programs, like GABA and others. Integrate postgraduate European programs, with special target on Erasmus Mundus actions (CMDT applications already submitted with European and African partners), mainly for PhD programs. Regarding CPLP and Africa programs, we will use the present platforms (RIDES, Procaps, and Iberian Platform for Malaria etc...) to leverage two main poles for postgraduate training in Luanda (Angola) and Maputo (Mozambique). CMDT presently negotiates the launching of a joint research-based PhD program, as a full partner of a consortium in the area of Environment and Health. This is due to be proposed for initiate in 2009-2010. |
