Plataforma Ibérica da Malária
At the end of 2007, a total of 65 researchers in the research area of malaria presented and discussed the establishment and objectives of an Iberian Malaria Platform "Plataforma Ibérica de Malaria". This took place in Lisboa.
Objectives and actions were discussed by the participants within three working-groups covering the following main research areas:
- 1) Molecular targets, drug design and leader compounds, therapeutics and drug resistance
- 2) Molecular epidemiology, mathematical models, population genetics, vectors and entomology.
- 3) Vaccines, pathogenesis, disease resistance, immunology.
For 2008, and onwards, the following courses, seminars or workshops were recommended:
- Methodologies for evaluating drug resistance.
- Screening methodologies.
- Mathematical models in biological systems.
- One workshop on GLC, GCP.
- One worshop/scientific meeting entitled "from animal models to human patients"
The regular on going courses would be also announced to the Plataforma members:
- Malaria: clinic, research and control. May 2008 scientific and technical supported by ISCIII with participation of CMDT and CRESIB
- Molecular Epidemiology of Malaria. 2009 (scientific and technical supported by ISCIII with participation of CMDT), and
The following activities were agreed to be organized in the next year:
a) Workshop: Mathematical models in biological system (IGC-CMDT-ISCIII-IRD)
b)Workshop: Malaria Population genetics: human mosquito and parasite (IGC-CMDT-ISCIII-IRD IGC-CMDT-ISCIII-IRD-IPATIMUP)
c) Annual practical course on laboratory models.
Whenever possible, the Platform would also facilitate the following actions:
- Briefing for funding and policy making in the EU
- Coordination with other networking activities, and
- Recruit new groups to work in malaria, which was strongly recommended.
Finally, it was discussed the reduction of present number of groups into the amalgamating of areas, into a smaller number of interactive Spanish and Portuguese teams, in RD areas to be defined, though already known for their leadership in the field of malaria.
Research lines related to:
a) Mathematical Models: To collaborate with the partnerts in order to develop and test epidemiological mathematical models to study the impact of interventions.
b) Population genetics: Frequency dependent selection in genes of P.falciparum, were recommend as a continuity work related to the area of drug resistance, drug targets and drug target validation.
A Scientific and Technology Committee of support to this Platform was constituted, with the following members:
- Domingo Gargallo GSK (Industry, Madrid)
- Jose María Fiandor GSK (Industry, Madrid)
- Rui Moreira Faculdade de Farmacia da Universidade de Lisboa
- Ana Paula Arez (Centro de Malária e Doenças Tropicais/IHMT, Lisboa)
- Pedro Berzosa (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid)
- Hernando del Portillo (CRESIB, Barcelona)
- Miguel Seabra (Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciências e Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, UNL).
A second PIM meeting will take place in 2009 in Madrid.
